BIOGRAPHY

CLAUDIA BUDER -  ACCORDION

Stories of life – the life within a story.

Claudia Buder was born and raised in Leipzig. Early encounters brought the opportunity to experience twenty years of socialistic realism in life, as well as in music. With the historical change in 1989, reality changed in general as well as musically. She completed her studies with Prof. Ivan Koval at the Hochschule für Musik FRANZ LISZT in Weimar in 1994 and with Prof. Mie Miki at the Folkwang Universität der Künste Essen in 1991. Inspired greatly by various master classes with Mogens Ellegaard, Stefan Hussong, Hugo Noth, Matti Rantanen, Jukka Tiensuu and others, she received two diplomas and the „Konzertexamen“. Her younger years were a time of taking part in national and international competitions and of winning several first prizes, among them the first prize of the International Competition for Accordion in Klingenthal. But every medal has its opposite side.

Learning to teach - teaching to learn.

A variety of opportunities for learning and teaching have broadened Claudia Buder’s horizons. International teaching positions have led her to the Turku University of Applied Sciences, Finland; the University Prešov, Slovakia; and the ARTEZ Enschede, Netherlands, in addition to her experiences in her native Germany. Teaching to her is not at all a secondary mainstay, but a primary vocation. To monitor children and young adults on their individual learning paths, especially as a teacher at Musikgymnasium Schloss Belvedere, continues to be an issue of great importance in her life experience. Claudia Buders leadership in side-by-side masterclasses as well as in teaching courses at an international level have resulted in 27 first Prizes of her students at the Bundeswettbewerb Jugend Musiziert.  To motivate through continuity, quality and artistic openness is a pedagogical triad that has become her personal and professional motto. In 2009, she founded the accordion specialisation at the Hochschule für Musik in Münster. In 2018 she received a Professorship at the Hochschule für Musik FRANZ LISZT, Weimar. Life teaches improvisation: Alban Berg as well as Markus Stockhausen inspire deeper discovery through the structure and freedom of intuitive music.

Variation in sound.

Claudia Buder is fascinated by the versatility of her instrument. Her chamber music activities with a number of different ensembles have been documented in a range of CDs  on the Academy, Animato, Bis, and Hänssler Classic labels. She has also performed throughout Europe and abroad with larger ensembles such as the Ensemble Ascolta, Ensemble Avantgardes, Ensemble Resonanz and the Ensemble Modern. Claudia Buder performed the accordion parts in the world premiere of Marijn Simons‘ opera Emilia Galotti, the German premiere of the new orchestration of Alban Berg’s Lulu, the German premiere of Georges Asperghis’ opera Les Boulingrins, and the chamber opera Powder Her Face by Thomas Adès.  She has appeared as soloist with ensembles such as the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, BBC Philharmonic, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and has worked with several well known conductors, such as George Alexander Albrecht, Kent Nagano, Andris Nelsons and Jonathan Stockhammer. In 2016 she performed as a soloist and in chamber music ensembles at the BBC proms with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sakari Oramo.  Claudia Buder has commissioned numerous new works from composers such as HK Gruber, Georg Katzer, Steffen Schleiermacher, Rebecca Saunders and Annette Schlünz. En avant!!
